Friedel Kantaut on his images:
»I work a lot with language. Sometimes I reach its limit though. When I express myself with images, I use different vocabulary. I think in photography, drawings, paintings, analogue and digital graphics and I often go as far as the technical boundaries of a means of expression.
Instead of using the perfect surface of digital photography, I edit the pictures until they begin to murmur and the pictures are on the cusp of dissolution.
Contentwise, I use elements from my everyday life, including the cinema, advertisement, comic strips and others. From this I build a parallel universe that I use to comment on the reality of the world that we have agreed on. I work in an illustrative way and link my artwork conceptually by means of alienation and a series of images. I present the viewer with possibilities and leave them free to choose their own path with the images.
As I do not believe that we can understand nor describe our world in its complexity, I refer to my direct surroundings, which can be experienced and are a mirror of the outside world. The contradictions found in private experiences are the model train for global contradictions.«
Friedel Kantaut was born in Osnabrück in 1954 and has lived in Berlin for several years.
