Description

How much attention do we pay to the moment? When do we register its irretrievability? How long do we linger in front of an image? Do we only recognize what we know? Do we see what we want or what we know?

Good art poses many questions.

Gert Schwab's snapshots are long exposures that are created in motion. This is actually a contradiction in terms. For dynamics, quickly fleeting moments and barely noticeable changes are made visible by capturing their light for longer than they exist.

This stopping of time is only possible through photography. The event, which becomes the motif, is effectively de-temporalized. In a picture, it remains present for as long as it is there. Every time you look at it, it appears in the now.

Gert Schwab's works give us at least an idea of what we can perceive without seeing it.
