The science of the human being and the perception of diversity belong to an important chapter of the European Enlightenment tradition. Stereotypes, clichés and hierarchies were both criticised and passed on without reflection. It was about nothing less than the question of what it means to be human. The exhibition "Lichtenbergs MenschenBilder" and this catalogue look at how Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach and other scientists and artists created images that had a lasting effect on the way Europeans perceived others and themselves.
