Painting the Virtual Mind

Susannah Martin

The experiences of photography, the current stance towards the body, the critical perception and struggle with our longing for nature and, not least, the smoke and mirrors of our pop-culture transmogrified by balloons and rubber animals turn everything to art that is consummately contemporary. An art that turns its preference points and roots into its sujet and incorporates them into the artistic discussion.

Andreas Greulich

Susannah Martin was born in 1964 in New York City. She studied fine arts at New York University and received a SEHNAP grant for painting. Among her most notable teachers were John Kacere, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine and Peter Campus. After her studies, she took on numerous large-scale public and private mural projects, and she also created works for film sets in New York, Berlin and Frankfurt am Main, where she lives and works today. In 2004 she returned to oil painting. The classic image subject of the nude in the landscape is Susannah Martin's subject. Martin's work creates a stage on which to reflect on man's engagement with the two poles of his identity, the natural and the artificial. People, nature and animals are in constant exchange – sometimes intimate, sometimes ecstatic.
