The volume »Die Natur will, dass Kinder Kinder sind …«. Kindheit im Wandel: Von der Aufklärung zur Romantik (»The nature wants children to be children …«. Childhood in transition: From the Enlightenment to Romanticism) explores the changes to which the concept of »childhood« was subjected between 1750 an 1850. From the birth of Goethe to late Romanticism a numerous amounts of themes are examined: childhood discourses, the romantic idealization of childhood and aspects of everyday history.

The volume contains contributions by Anne Bohnenkamp, Ute Dettmar, Andreas Dietzel, Gunilla Eschenbach, Nina Gorgus, Mareike Hennig, Katja Kaluga, Ulrike Landfester, Sophie Lauster, Tobias Picard, Joachim Seng, Nina Sonntag, Heike Spies, Neela Struck and Christof Wingertszahn.

In addition, the corresponding exhibition can be seen in the Deutsches Romantik-Museum Frankfurt from 27th October 2023 to 21st January 2024.

Joachim Seng is head of the Spezialbibliothek zur Goethezeit und Romantik (library on the Goethe period and Romanticism) of the Freies Deutsches Hochstift/Frankfurter Goethe-Museum and administers the archive with documents on the history of the Hochstift and the Frankfurter Goethe-Haus.

Katja Kaluga works in the manuscript department of the Freies Deutsches Hochstift/Frankfurter Goethe-Museum.
